Running a business involves a lot of financial activities, from expenses and bills to taxes and payroll – accountants keep track of all these things and more. It takes a business brain, as well as a way with numbers, to get ahead.

  • Overview


    An Apprenticeship in accounting will enable you to actively participate in the running of a business by learning and assisting with its financial activities, such as invoicing, sales ledgers, taxes and payroll. You will initially begin as an assistant accountant and help a business plan and manage their money, so you must be methodical, efficient, and discreet at all times. You are likely to be office based and working in a finance department as part of a larger organisation, or in a small accountancy firm.

    This will give you exposure to a number of other businesses and offers good opportunities for both career and study progression. You will also be awarded with an AAT certificate in accounting. Within the offer from Runshaw College you will gain additional professional qualifications within this Apprenticeship which are: Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) qualification.

  • Entry Requirements

    4 x GCSE A*-D / 9-3 including GCSE English at A*-C / 9-4 and Maths at A*-D / 9-3 or equivalent AND a pass at Level 2 AAT certificate in Accounting or a L2 Accounting qualification from another awarding body or A Level Accounting at A*-C. The ability to word process is essential.

    Please note that employers may stipulate higher entry requirements than those listed and should therefore be treated as the minimum entry criteria. However, if you do not currently meet the entry requirements for the apprenticeship you wish to apply for, you may also be considered based on related subject qualifications and/or life/work experience or upon successfully achieving the required Basic and Key Skill Builder (BKSB) results.

    Should you meet entry requirements but not hold a level 4/C in English and/or Maths you will need to complete a functional skills course alongside your apprenticeship. As part of the application process you will be assessed to see your current working level, acceptance will be based on this outcome. Your programme duration may be extended to allow for functional skills.

  • How will I be assessed?

    Candidates will build a portfolio of evidence containing examples of work-based evidence, observations and written work. Each candidate will be allocated a qualified work-based assessor who will assess the candidate’s practical skills and competence in the workplace.

  • Employer Requirements

    Employers must be prepared to work with their Apprentices to develop their knowledge and skills by providing a wide range of learning and training opportunities. They must also be prepared to allow them to attend College sessions at the agreed times. Employers are also expected to encourage Apprentices to research their chosen vocation and to support any work experience that will benefit the Apprentice to come up to reach the required level of competence.

  • Attendance & Support

    Runshaw College believes that attendance and punctuality are key factors in the timely success of an apprenticeship. Apprentices are accepted on the basis that they will have a high level of attendance at college (if applicable) and in the workplace. Persistent or regular absenteeism is a disciplinary offence and may lead to dismissal from the programme.

    Runshaw apprentices will be offered support and be encouraged to develop the ability to work on their own and as team players. We expect our apprentices to show enthusiasm and the motivation to reach and exceed their goals.

    It is important to maintain time keeping and attendance for both college (if applicable) and workplace sessions to ensure learners remain on target.
