A Level Sport and Physical Education is a two year course which will give you the opportunity to study a range of topics such as healthy and active lifestyles, analysis and evaluation of physical activity as a performer, evaluating contemporary issues within sport and optimising practical performance in competitive situations. Students who enjoy and successfully complete this subject typically progress onto a range of degree courses at university including Sports Science, Sports Studies, Leisure Management and Physiotherapy.

As a Sport & Physical Education student at Runshaw, you can be assured of the very best teaching, all supported by our interactive environment, where class notes, revision notes, quizzes and guidance notes are available for students to access from both inside and outside of college. Some theory content will be delivered through engaging, practical lessons making use of our state-of-the-art sports hall and fitness suite facilities.
You will have the chance to take the theory of your lessons and put it into practice by visiting various universities for exercise physiology testing, and using facilities such as climbing walls and driving ranges.
After finishing your course you can progress to university to study a variety of courses, including Sports Science, Sports Studies, Leisure Management, Teaching, Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy and others.
For those wishing to study Physiotherapy at university, subject combinations should please be considered carefully and further advice sought.
What will I study?
- Section A: Applied physiology, including the cardiovascular system, respiratory system, musculoskeletal system, biomechanics
- Section B: Skill acquisition and sports psychology including classifications of skills, anxiety, theories of learning, motivation
- Section C: Sport and society and technology in sport, including the history of sport, barriers to participation, commercialisation, video analysis programmes

- Entry Requirements
Our A Level programme requires a minimum of 5 GCSE subjects at Grade 5.
This must include a Grade 5 in GCSE PE (if taken) and a Grade 5 in Science or Biology.
- How will I be assessed?
Year 1
The course is assessed internally via a formal assessment for theory content, practical assessment of performance in a chosen sport, and written coursework
Year 2
The course is assessed via two 2-hour examinations for theory content, with external moderation of the practical and written coursework

Students can progress to university to study a variety of courses, including Sports Science, Sports Studies, Leisure Management, Teaching, Sports Therapy, Physiotherapy and others.
